Current Exhibit: Ukraine – In Celebration and Contemplation

Hubbard Hall is proud to present Ukraine – In Celebration and Contemplation, a curated exhibit of selected works of art from Ukraine, organized from the collection of Ellie Valentine. The exhibit coincides with the Community Breakfast in December 2025 in Cambridge, NY.

The collection features works from contemporary Ukrainian artists as well as an American artist who has lived and worked in Ukraine. Spanning the years 2000–2024, the pieces showcase the richness, diversity, and resilience of Ukrainian art and culture.

Curator:

Ellie Valentine, who spent significant time living and working in Kyiv and other countries as part of a career in international academic exchanges and development, met and supported many artists through gallery visits, studio tours, and fundraising events. She continues to support Ukrainian artists today and is pleased to share the beauty and variety of these works with the Hubbard Hall community.

Featured artists include:

Olena Pryduvalova (1960 – ), whose paintings, drawings, and decorative arts capture the landscapes, streets, and cultural traditions of Kyiv, combining traditional crafts such as “Motanka” rag dolls with contemporary themes, including responses to recent conflicts. Laureate of the “Outstanding Artist of Ukraine” award (1998), her works are in museum and private collections in Ukraine and abroad.

Oleksiy Apollonov (1962 – ), a painter and graphic artist whose work embraces surprise and experimentation across abstract, non-figurative, primitivist, and landscape styles, using color to convey emotion and personal outlook.

KS Lack, an American writer and artist with a background in Post-Soviet Studies, who lived in Kyiv from 1994–1996, helped launch Dzerkalo Tyzhnia (The Mirror Weekly), one of Ukraine’s first independent newspapers, and whose art explores transcending constraints.
