Program
Allen Shawn … In Memory Of, for clarinet, violin, cello, and piano
Max Bruch … Eight Pieces for Clarinet, Viola, and Piano, Opus 83
Amy Beach … Romance for Violin and Piano
Gabriel Fauré … Piano Quartet in C Minor, Opus 15
The Music from Salem October 20th program celebrates Romanticism through the lens of four wonderful imaginations. In the 1860s, studying in Paris, Gabriel Fauré developed a unique and free style of harmony which is at the center of his irresistibly expressive compositional language, breathing rich life and color into the ripe end of the romantic era. His C minor Piano Quartet is seamless, elegant, and dramatic. Allen Shawn is a lauded and prolific composer and author who has taught at Bennington College since 1985. With ‘In Memory Of’, he transforms a set of memories into a hauntingly beautiful soundscape. And, nearly contemporaries, bridging the 19th and 20th from two sides of the Atlantic, Max Bruch and Amy Beach each cultivated a distinctive romantic palette. The Beach ‘Romance’ is a searching poem for violin and piano, and the Bruch pieces offer a delightful conversation among friends.
Music from Salem is thrilled to welcome violinist Daniel Phillips for the first time. He was a co-founder of the incomparable Orion String Quartet, which, after nearly four decades, gave its farewell concert in April, 2024 at the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society. Also making his Hubbard Hall debut is cellist Mihai Marica, an international prize-winning cellist and member of the acclaimed Apollo Trio. Eric Thomas enjoys a multifaceted career as a clarinetist of stunning lyricism, as conductor of the Keene Chamber Orchestra, and is also in growing demand as a composer. Since moving to New Mexico in 2021, pianist and Music from Salem consulting director Judith Gordon has worked closely with Chatter, a unique organization presenting close to 150 events annually in Albuquerque and Santa Fe. And Music from Salem Founder and Artistic Director, violist Lila Brown, after spending much of her career abroad, and in Boston, is now thriving as a full-time resident of Washington County.
